Dr Think Right's 4 Steps for Managing my Emotions
- Identify the emotion
“How are you feeling” sad, lonely, angry?”
- Validate the feelings
‘It is OK to feel ………… I have felt …………. lots of times before. It is very normal.”
- Encourage expression
“When you feel…………. what does it make you want to do?”
- Encourage the setting of limits
If you do this, will it get you into trouble or hurt someone else? How else can you express the way you are feeling without hurting yourself or others?
Looking Glass
Dr Think Right wants you to be happy as often as you can.
When you look in the mirror what do you see?
A happy, sad, lonely, funny, clever person?
What do you see?
- I am happy when I...
- I am sad when I...
- I am funny when I...
- I get angry when...
- I am clever when I...
Solve these Problems
Here are some problems for you to solve with your friends. Discuss all the different emotions you might feel in these different situations.
You may like to use these 4 questions to help solve each of the following problems:
- What would Dr Think Right say?
- How would he want you to think? Clue: (Look at the top of this page).
- Who would he suggest you see for help? (friends, teacher, older student, parent, carer).
Make sure that everyone is happy at the end of the journey.
When I came into class one day someone had moved my books and now I was sitting in a place far away from my friends. .. What am I going to do? At playtime a big person in a higher grade came and took our basketball. What can we do?
I went to my bag at morning tea and realised that I had forgotten to pack my lunch. What can I do?
"I can solve all my problems with a little help from my friends!"
