All Systems Go (Years 2 to 3) |
Years 2 to 3

We all need to breathe fresh clean air to keep our body healthy and alert.
- Breathe in through your nose.
- The fresh air goes down your wind pipe and into your lungs.
- In the lungs the fresh air (oxygen) passes into the blood stream.
- The oxygen that has already been used by the body is breathed out.It is called carbon dioxide.

We all need to eat healthy food to keep our body active and healthy.
Look at a vein in your arm. Food particles have to be small enough to pass through your veins and arteries. That is why Dr Gastro Nomical says, “Chew your food until it is like baby food.”
- We use our teeth to bite and chew our food.
....In our mouth the food is mixed with saliva.
- When we swallow it goes down a slimy pipe
....which is connected to the stomach.
- The stomach produces acid that helps to break
....down the food to smaller parts so that it can ....enter the bloodstream.
- The food passes through more fleshy tubes called
....intestines which wind around and around and around ....and then is passed out when we go to the toilet.

We all need to look after our heart because it keeps our body alive.
- The heart is a strong muscle that pumps blood all around our body. Arteries take blood away from our heart and veins carry the blood back to our heart.
- The blood carries the energy from the food we have digested to every living cell our body.
- The energy from our food helps us to grow, move and heal.
- The heart beats quickly when we are exercising and slowly when we are resting.

We all need to look after our brain because it keeps our body safe, healthy and happy.
- Our brain needs good food, clean air, water, sunshine, to be loved, to learn new things and very importantly to rest.
- Different areas of the brain have differnt jobs to do.
- The mid brain controls our breathing; our digestive system and our heart rate.
- The brain helps us to learn, keep our balance and to decide whether we like something or not.
