Body System
What if….?
Attitude
Nervous System
Relates to the brain for problem solving, choosing & survival. It also includes automatic responses in the body like blinking.
What if you were told not to think creatively anymore at school. No more problem solving…making choices? What sort of lessons would you do all day?
What would happen to the different parts of your brain?
Air
Respiratory System
For breathing in oxygen and breathing out carbon dioxide.
What if you were told that you had to sit at your desk crouched over your work so that no one could see what you were doing?
What would happen to your muscles?
How would it affect your breathing and ability to think?
Nutrition
Digestive System
For breaking down food so that the nutrients fromthe food can enter the blood stream and nourish the entire body.
What if you were told you had to gobble your lunch down in 5 minutes? What would happen in the mouth, the oesophagus, the stomach and the intestines?
How would you feel when you were trying to exercise or do work in class?
What if you were told from now on you could only eat sugar sweets or treat foods. There would be no more wholesome cereals, meats, dairy, fruit and vegetables.
Sunshine
Integumentary System
The skin provides a protective barrier between ourselves and the outside environment.
What if you were told you couldn’t wear your hat outside anymore?
What if you were told that schools had decided the UV rays of the sun were so dangerous for children's longterm health, that in the summer months, school was now going to run at night-time? Everyone was therefore expected to sleep during the day.
Water
Urinary System
Helps eliminate waste from the body through urine. Keeps the fluids in our body clean and balanced.
What if you were told that you were banned from bringing water bottles to school because the teachers were tired of finding waterbottles left lying around and often unnamed or because some students were using them to have water fights at lunchtime?
Based on your understanding of the urinary system and the water content of parts of the body, how could you argue the need for water bottles at school before the principal?
Exercise
Circulatory System
Involves the heart and the movement of blood around our body.
Musculoskeletal System
Relates to all the muscles and bones in our body.
What if you were told that physical activity was banned from school and that movement was to be kept to a bare minimum everyday?
How would that impact your body? Think about what would happen to your circulatory and musculoskeletal systems.
How would it impact your mind and your emotions?
Rest
Nervous System
Within the brain is a sleep and rest system. This helps us to slow down and refresh ourselves after we have been active.
What if you were told that the government had made a statement saying that the children of today were overtired and overstressed and from now on half the school day was to be spent resting, playing with pets or doing hobbies? How would that impact the behaviour of students in your class?
How would that impact how much students learnt?
Relax.............
